This is probably a stupid question, but what I don´t get in roulette, is if you were to put a pound on each number, 1 through to 36, you would lose £35 but win £35 -- plus you´d get your original pound bet back. This cannot be true because it implies an even chance of winning across the table. How do the casinos make their money?

ANSWER:

Hi Mark- first off, there is no such thing as a stupid question in roulette! Secondly, you´re forgetting about the pesky 0 pocket (there´s one in European roulette and two in American). That´s where the house gets its edge. In European roulette you have 37 pockets and in American you have 38.

On a single number bet you´re paid 35-1 and your odds are 37-1 in European and 38-1 in American.

(Incidently, have you noticed something obvious already? The odds are better in European Roulette, so I would recommend always playing this version of roulette, unless of course you like betting on the zero pockets).

I´d like to tell you that you had discovered a fail safe get rich scheme (or at least a fail safe no loss scheme!), but unfortunately I can´t. There is always a house edge in roulette. People do win money at the wheel, but if you surveyed 1000 people playing roulette, on average the casino would be up and the group of people would be down.

The trick is to be one of the individuals who are up and when you are up to know when to walk away from the table!
